Work experience
May 2008- Present day, Carillion, Senior Engineer
I was contracted by Carillion Roads to back up the engineering team working on the Deeside Junction Improvement Works M56/A5117, for the final couple of months of the project before the opening of the scheme at the end of August 2008. My responsibilites are as follows; to make sure all gangs are suplied with the appropiate paper work, (ie method statements, risk assessments, permits etc), supervise all the setting out engineers, sub contractor supervision, recording of the daily site diary, ensure that all health and safety regulations are upheld, handing over of completed works to the clients representive’s, solve any engineering issues that might occure and any other issues that might arrise during the general running of the site.
This project dealt with a large amount of surfacing, I was also responsible for checking all levels before the next course was laid especially with all the different courses of ashphalt. The surfacing contractor could only continue after the present course had been signed of by myself.
Febuary 2008- April 2008, Daniel Contractors Limited, Site Manager
Client: Welsh Water & Black and Veach
Daniel Contractors have formed a partnership with Black & Veach to construct a new water treatment works in Penybont, Mid West Wales.
As project manager I am responsiable for all activities on site, my every day duties include the following, writing of method statements/risk assesments, client liasance, giving tool box talks and organising ongoing training for all personnel, site inductions, ordering of plant and materials, managing sub contractors, chairing weekly site progress/health & Saftey meetings, working with the on site QS to make sure the project is financially successful, updating the weekly programme and all outstanding health & Saftey matters.
As this is a very high profile project to improve the quality of drinking water to the local community there is no room for a slip up in the programme and the delivery of the works on time.
The scope of works include an underground holding tank constructed from reinforced concrete, a steel framed building with numerous cable trenches and plynths cast into its base, a complicated selection of pipe work at a number of different levels, some gravity flow and some pumped all in a small area of works, 2 No by pass seperator tanks and a number of small concrete pads spread over the site. After all the infrastructures have been installed there is construction of a surface water system to be built then the reinstatement of tarmacked carriageways.
July 2007-January 2008, United Utilities, Project Manager
Client: Lafarge Agregates.
Lafarge agregates have contracted United Utilities to lay the gas, water, electric and B.T.supplies in one multi utility trench to there new plasterboard factory in FerryBridge. My role is to leaise between the sub contractors, asset owners and the client. As part of the route taken is through FerryBridge power station great care and health and saftey regulations are very important.
I had to organise all the connections to the medium pressure gas main by the asset owners approved contractor, and like wise for the water, electric and B.T. connections.
The programme was very important in this project as every day that was lost in the programme was a day later that the factory could start producing plasterboard and causing the client great expensives.
A large part of this project was in a major carriage way, I was also responsible for making sure all the resurfacing works were carried out to specification and then needed to sign them off to the local authority highways inspector.
April 2007-July 2007
Doing contract work for various civil engineering contractors, mainly covering for sick and holiday leave of there employers.
Because of my varied background and work experience I was able to adapt into an ongoing project for short periods to cover for permament staff on leave.
January 2006 – April 2007, Morgan Est. Site Agent/QS.
Working on the Amp 4 project (waste water)
Client: United Utilities
This is a joint venture with two large contractors forming a partnership so they can cover all aspects of engineering that is needed to take on a project of this caliber.
Since January I have been involved in a couple of mini projects and QS assignments, firstly I was responsiable for arranging for trial holes to be dug and recorded all over the NW, this included arranging for gangs to be set up, recording all there results and passing over the information over to the design team. I had to make sure all health & Saftey regulations were being kept at all times and liasance with local authorities for road closures.
The results of these trial holes were very important because the new pipe work was designed around the results that I supplied.
My second position was to manage a large emergency repair of a collapsed 300mm foul sewer at an invert of 6 metres, on top of the foul sewer pipe sat an 800mm concrete surface water pipe.
When I first arrived on site the whole carriagway had collapsed, so my first thoughts was to make it safe for the general public and get the whole area fenced off, secondly provissions had to be made for over pumping the live foul sewer and surface water lines, this was done by a number of super silent 6” pumps that pumped the water from the upstream manholes, by passed the damage and discharged into the down stream manholes.
After excavating and making the dig safe by using interlocking sheet piles and frames, we could carry out an investigation of the cause of the problem, the results were that the foul sewer collapsed making a void below the surface water, then the surface water collapsed and all the back fill got washed down the 800mm pipe and eventually the road collapsed.
With the depth that we were working at we were below the water line and a de-watering system had to be installed.
The entire road needed to be resurfaced to highway specification, I needed to check all levels of the courses of ashphalt before the sub contractor could continue, then the road was signed of by myself and the local authority highways inspector.
I was responsible for all activities, H&S, plant, labour and materials, and also trying to reopen the road in the shortest time as possiable, I also communicated with local residents keeping them informed.
I have managed a open cut pipe laying project, laying 1200mm pipes through public highways and fields in the Ashton In Makerfield area, in this project we also had a small section of pipe jacking to do involving sinking shafts for the thrust and reception pits. As mentioned above I was responsiable for all site activities and H&S.
My present assignment is to organise all the H&S files, As-Laid drawings, snagging lists and CCTV camera surveys for all the projects we have completed since January and liase with the commercial team, so that we can hand the final accounts over to the client and hopefully get paid.
As the client is a government run body all the paper work has to be correct and in order before any monies are credited to us.
June 2005-January 2006, Ascot Environmental. Site Agent.
Preparing a landfill site from an existing clay quarry.
Client: Mersey Waste. Project size: approx £2 million.
I was responsible for the every day running of the site.
The site is located in North Wales, just south of Wrexham. My normal duties include the following:
Being responsible for and making sure all H&S regulations are carried out to the highest level, this being checked by an outside contractor on a bi-monthly basis.
Bringing in all sub-contractors and any other personnel that might be necessary on site.
Recording all work hours of operatives and plant.
Complying a weekly cost spreadsheet that is presented to the client on a regular basis.
Chairing weekly H&S and progress meetings.
Recording all quantities for invoicing the client and checking sub contractors.
Keeping the project to programme.
Maintenance of cabins and clients prelim requirements.
Client/contract liason.

The aim of this project is to construct a land fill site from an old clay quarry; the site is spread over a large area (approx 70000sqm). The majority of the work is earth movement using large plant. (Dumper trucks, excavators, bulldozers and compactors.) The remainder of the activities are infrastructure works, ranging from drainage, ducting, foul sewers, concrete pads and building a weigh bridge.
