Professional Experience

Six Sigma Black Belt / Manufacturing Engineer – Thorn Lighting Ltd, Spennymoor.
In my last position I was employed by Thorn Lighting Ltd in the Lean Sigma / engineering department. Thorn Lighting Ltd is a manufacturer of high quality professional indoor and outdoor lighting with a strong international presence. I was responsible for the Recessed Wiring Robots ensuring that important KPI’s were met while reducing internal and external cost of non-quality. The role incorporated several key engineering functions into one; manufacturing, quality, internal & external auditing and improvement.

Key responsibilities:
• Ensure warranty failures are within budget.
• Scrap and rejects reduction.
• Achieve budgeted quality index.
• Keep OEE within target.
• Achieve budgeted performance index.
• Reduce labour costs.
• Cost reduction projects.
• Ensure all material supplied to line meets specifications.
• Improve plant layout in order to improve efficiency.
• Press shop programming.

• Relocation of three robot wiring cells into a new manufacturing facility while minimising production downtime.
• Six sigma black belt project – reducing PPM warranty issues across all Recessed Robot product ranges.
• Introduction of automatic testing on Omega Fast product range – estimated annual saving £8k.
• Reduction in number of cable cleats across all Recessed Robots product ranges – estimated annual saving £10.5k.
• New product introduction project – responsible for transfer of Diffusalux range from Thorn plant in Sweden.
• Introduction of LSOH cable for Recessed Robots.
• Purchase of new BJB robot heads for all three Recessed Robots including a number of process improvements.

Industrial Engineer – Thorn Lighting Ltd, Spennymoor.
In this role I worked in the Recessed Department, reporting directly to the manufacturing manager, where I provided hands on support and guidance to non-technical staff by helping with the process design and specification, tooling and equipment improvements, undertaking capital investments projects, re-layout of facilities, product method studies and involvement in the introduction of new products. Through this role I have become competent in the use of AutoCAD, ProEngineer, AutoDesk Inventor, Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, Word and Excel. I have a good understanding of many manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies, such as 8D, Seven-step problem solving, KIAZEN, SMED, OEE, 5S, SPC, QFD and FMEA all of which I have used in this role.

Key responsibilities:
• Formulating projects to improve overall efficiency and promote continuous improvement in all aspects of the operation using various lean manufacturing concepts.
• Reviewing all existing tooling and manufacturing techniques with emphasis on improving manufacturing efficiency utilising Poke Yoke and SMED methodologies.
• Specifying and installation of new capital equipment
• Identifying and improving processes to reduce costs and increase manufacturing capabilities and flexibility.
• Analysing recorded information on process/method variations with the objective of diagnosing and providing effective solutions to problems.
• Calculation of assembly times and work measurement.
• Control and input of manufacturing routings onto MRP2 systems (Baan & SAP)..
• Health and safety responsibilities including risk assessments.
• Co-ordinating BOM creation report.
• Production support.
• Creation of cable cell manufacturing plan.
• Specification of new product packaging.
• Line balancing.

• Project leader for relocation of manufacturing facility.
• Six Sigma project to reduce lead-time of key process, with 61% improvement and approx £10K saving.
• Development and purchase of environmentally friendly re-usable packaging worth £22.7K for major projects worth in excess of £5M.
• Involvement in Heathrow T5 project.
• Project leader for product improvement team and KAIZEN team.

Electrical / Mechanical Engineering Apprentice – Thorn Lighting Ltd, Spennymoor
As an Engineering apprentice I attended South West Durham Training Ltd to gain a basic appreciation of engineering skills, which included mechanical maintenance, machining methods and assembly of pneumatic systems. After this training period I returned to Thorn Lighting to improve and broaden my engineering knowledge, by spending time in various departments. I was then based in the Engineering Department to obtain an in depth knowledge of the engineering function. The role provided the opportunity to work on projects in a supporting role as well as the project leader, such as Dimeco manufacturing line and Aida automatic press. I was also responsible for carrying out risk assessments during these projects to minimise any dangers in the workplace

• Supported senior project engineer in the introduction of a £750K purpose built production facility.
• Involved in the introduction of £135K Automatic press.
