For the last four years I have been undertaking doctoral research at the University of Surrey in collaboration with Rolls Royce and the DTI to investigate cavity rim seal design optimisation in a jet engine turbine. This research investigated the aerodynamic aspects of the turbine efficiency and cavity rim sealing efficiency focusing on implementing and researching methodologies that could be added to an efficient design chain. The research also focused on the ability of steady CFD-predicted optimisation trends to be reproduced using unsteady CFD.

Having previously graduated from the ESSTIN, France, with a Masters of Engineering in Fluid Mechanics and Energy, and a Masters of Sciences in Modelling of unstable flows and thermodynamics, I am currently completing my PhD in “Improvements of turbine efficiency through cavity rim seal redesign”. I possess a deep understanding of fluid dynamics, aerodynamic phenomena in turbines as well as optimisation and heat transfer. Throughout this experience I have developed a pronounced interest in CFD code development. After 4 years of postgraduate research I have proven ability to contribute to a large scale project, producing full and interim reports, giving presentations and delivering a project within time.

During the last year of my postgraduate research I worked as a CFD consultant for IDAC Ltd, modelling a wide range of CFD problems from conjugate heat transfer predictions, sound predictions in an elevator shaft, failure of safety valves through non uniform thermal stresses distributions induced by fluid flows, my work also focused on sound generated by an elevator and a wind turbine. Throughout this experience I also have developed a very broad understanding of structural behaviour and 2-way FSI. I have also taken part in a recent wind farm modelling seminar where I have given three lectures. I am also managing a team of 3 CFD engineers.

Undertaking a wide range of CFD/FEA problems, with an emphasis in CFD modelling. Those projects included:

- Prediction of fluid structure interaction for a thermally-induced high pressure valve closing failure

- Investigation of wind speed cities and conjugate CFD/heat transfer modelling of submarine oil pipes

- Design and optimisation of wind turbines blades using both CFD and FEA analysis

- Creating technical sales demonstrations for potential CFX buyers

- Providing CFX trainings and support for fluids analysts and specialised researchers.

- Writing/validating multiple technical project proposals and knowledge transfer reports.

Specialisation: CFD (Computational Fluids Dynamics) and optimisation of turbine stage.

Co-development of Rolls Royce's mesh generation, CFD solving, post-processing and visualisation software (in C and FORTRAN).Design of optimisation parameters and assessment of objective functions for optimisation of high pressure turbine stages. Investigation into the unsteady aerodynamics of 3D endwalls for a turbine and its interaction with the cavity rim seal coolant flow. Design of a methodology to compare turbine stages for unsteady simulations and providing technical support for Rolls Royce staff for CFD convergence on HP turbines. Currently in the process of writing up the PhD thesis and doing the final corrections/adjustments.
