SVITZER Middle East September 2008 to Present

POSITION: Regional Technical Manager, Middle East

Position reports directly to MD of SVITZER Middle East. This business unit covers all Middle East Countries, India. and Africa. Regional Technical Manager holds Technical and Purchasing responsibility for the ME Fleet. This comprises 45 ASD Tugs of various BP from 45 to 70 Tonnes. There are an additional 20 Pilot Boats and Work Boats. There are 12 reports in Technical Superintendents, Dry-dock Superintendents and Port Engineers, .R&M Budget of USD36M. SVITZER Middle East contributes 13% of the world wide operation.

• Technical Management of Fleet through staff of 12.
• Provide Executive Board with engineering advice supporting commercial direction.
• Plan and operate US$16M R&M, Dry Dock and Purchasing Budgets.
• Review all Engineer appointments to vessels.
• Conduct Internal Technical Audits.

Promoted to this role following success in North Queensland Operation. Took up the role as career advancement into Executive Senior Management.


• Achieved US$750K savings within 6 months of starting by improved negotiating methods and strategic changes to Purchasing methods.
• Derived plans to execute 15 vessel sequential dry docks over 16 month period.
• Improved Safety Record with Zero LT Accidents since taking over the role.
• Championed strategies to gain fuel savings through monitoring and instigating new start up methods specifically to achieve this, 3% saving so far.
• Introduced improved systems of communications HO/Vessels and improved reporting standards,
• Reduced Dry Docking periods by 66% through planning and negotiating with Yards.
• Set up Enabling Contract with Dock Yard to provide ‘pit stop’ repair schedules which has reduced down time in port by 50%, and therefore improved On Hire Times.
• Contributed to improved Operations Budgets visibility by improving how the figures are consolidated.

I feel I have achieved well in this role although I would prefer a role nearer to my family.

SVITZER Australia, North Queensland April 2007 to September 2008

POSITION: Ports, Technical and Safety Manager North Queensland.
This role reports to the Regional Manager Queensland (Brisbane) on a day-to-day basis and functionally to the Group Technical and Safety Officer (Sydney) to ensure that regional targets are met and organisational procedures and systems are implemented and maintained.

The general area of responsibility includes:

• Technical Management of the Fleet within the area (10 Tugs) in Weipa, Cairns, Mourilyan, Lucinda and Townsville.
• Direction and Management of local team and vessel crews to ensure optimal levels of reliability and availability in a cost effective way.
• Implementation and maintain Safety Management systems on board.

SVITZER Australia is Danish Owned Company, part of the worldwide conglomerate AP Moller/Maersk. The Company acquired the Adsteam Harbour in May 2007. SVITZER specialises in safety and support at sea, salvage and port towage, providing services to Ship-owners, Port Authorities and to state and federal governments for intervention salvage.

The Company owns and manages 75 Tugs around the Australian Coast and employs around 400 staff ashore and afloat. North Queensland operates a budget of Au$9M per year which is about 9% of the Company’s annual turn over.


• Cost effective maintenance and repair of Fleet of delegated Vessels. NQ has a fleet of 10 tugs and 4 lines boats of varying vintage and BP, ranging from 30T BP fixed nozzle and rudders built 1972 through to 59T BP ASD Tugs built 2007.
• Provision of timely and expert advice to State Manager and Group Technical and Safety Manager on Fleet condition and situations likely to threaten safe working or breakdown.
• Liaison with Class, Vessel Crews and Government Authorities.
• Preparation of Dry-dock specifications, ITT’s and responses, submissions of CAPEX applications to Senior Management for docking cost approval.
• Chair all OH & S Meetings and reviews of minutes of Shipboard Meetings.
• Investigate and Report on Shipboard Incidents.
• Provide logistical support when required for salvage operations.
• Assist, advise and represent the Company in the development of new business and special projects
• Deputise for the Regional Manager.


• Conducted full slipping process of 48T BP ASD Tug within 3 weeks of joining Company. Ultimate expenditure $800k excluding 15% negotiated discount.
• Prepare, review and let contracts for two $500K dockings for Tugs in the Fleet.
• Recruited to SVITZER as Fleet Manager in May, promoted to Ports, Technical and Safety Manager NQ August 2007.
• Redesigned fuel transfer pump safety shut off system following minor diesel pollution incident.
• Instigate system of centralised critical spares for fleet class common tugs around country to reduce unscheduled downtime due to lack of readily available critical spares. Achieved 2 days saving of downtime through this initiative.
• Stood by 2 new building 59T ASD Tugs (Robert Allen) at Builders in China. Second unit delivered 1 week early. Integrated new tug into port operations within 48 hours of arrival and discharged charter tug 5 days early.
• Designed and maintained Guarantee defects spreadsheet for recording and monitoring new vessel yard based faults.
• Achieved zero LT accidents during tenure.

Promoted within Group to Regional Technical Manager in Middle East

ROSSHAVEN MARINE, Townsville July 2006 to April 2007

POSITION: General Manager. This role reports directly to the Board of 4 Shareholder/Directors. The role was created so that the Managing Director could retire and take up Chairman of the Board

Rosshaven Marine is a privately owned, full service Haulout and repair facility operating from two locations in Townsville.

The main yard at 44 Fifth Ave., South Townsville was built in 1985 and the company currently employs between 40 and 45 management, administrative and technical staff. There is a 500 tonne slipway, a 68 tonne Ship Lifter and a recently commissioned 180 tonne Ship Lifter. Over $2M has been spent in the last 18 months upgrading the Yard facility and resources.

Concurrently Rosshaven provides a full range of repair services to commercial and pleasure vessels. The customer base also comprises Dept. Defence with the Pacific Patrol Boat Life Extension Program, LCM8 and LPA Watercraft landing barges. The Company has now completed 6 out of 7(20,000 man-hour) life extension refits on the Pacific Patrol Boats now and expect to complete the last vessel by the end of April 2007

The Company employs between 35 and 50 tradesmen and trades assistants depending on Production loading covering Boilermaking, Marine Fitting, Shipwrights, abrasive blasting and spray painting and a specialist propeller repairs branch.

There are in-water berths for 12 vessels, 30 dry stand work sites and 60 storage spaces.


• Responsible to the Board for strategic use of Company infrastructure, human resources and production assets.

• Take responsibility for all aspects of general management in delivering ship repair projects to time, cost, and quality with projected profit margin and customer satisfaction.

• Introduce contemporary processes for annual budgets, HR logistics, and workforce sizing, planned maintenance systems for submission to Group for approval.

• Take over the Company Leadership role and sustain successful and profitable operation of the Company.

• Provide effective financial management of the Company by developing resources, economies and strategic investment opportunities.

• Oversee and approve all commercial tendering and quoting through accurate estimating and customer liaison.

• Develop, build and manage Client relationships.

• Maintain QA Accreditation to ISO 9001

• Ensure compliance with EPA and relevant Authorities.


• Attracted and courted new marine customers through the identification of different market segments to replace diminishing fishing industry.
• Improved workforce skill mixes and actively encouraged cross trades to provide greater flexibility.

FORGACS CAIRNCROSS DOCKYARD December 2005 to July 2006

POSITION: Operations Manager. This position reports to the General Manager of the Yard.

Forgacs Cairncross Dockyard is a flagship ship repair company within the larger parent Forgacs Group. The company operates the largest dry-dock on Australia’s Eastern Seaboard and attracts large ship repair contracts annually from a plethora of ship owners. The company promulgates an annual turn over in excess of Au$17M from this unique central Brisbane 35 hectare site.


• Responsible to General Manager for strategic and most economic directions of Company infrastructure, human resources and production assets.

• Direct 11 Supervisors and 2 Project Managers regarding all aspects of production management in delivering ship repair projects to time, cost, and quality with projected or exceeded profit margins and customer satisfaction.

• Present Annual Budgets for HR logistics, workforce sizing, planned and unscheduled maintenance regimes for submission to Group for approval.

• Forecast, recruit and sustain production workforce of 65 permanent blue-collar staff with the strategic use of a casual workforce that on occasions is in excess of 300.

• Provide complete logistic operations management for Yard

• Identify and supervise training packages for trades’ people and First Line Managers.

• Deputy Chair of the Safety Committee and provide production management representation at Health and Safety investigations and visits from government departments, (also EPA).

• Deputise for General Manager.


• Derived and presented an acceptable spending profile to accommodate disruptive production-reliant plant failures in strategic timeframe.

• Wrote methodology for repair to 50T crane gearbox using in-house facilities and capabilities. Normally this type of repair would be outsourced.

• Resized the in-house maintenance team to an effective size and reduced overtime expenditure in this area by 60%

• Derived and directed several Marine Engineering solutions to complex problems, assisting ship owners to overcome long-standing problems to mutual benefit.

• Revitalised and refocused attention on the training of trades Apprentices. Recruited 4 since starting and also installed Apprentice Master Role.
