Electrical Design Team – Cargo Automation System
Design Engineer (February 2006 to Present)
Responsibilities:
- Electrical and Instrument design of commercial ship, majority on LNG Carriers, and also of Bulk Carriers, crude oil tankers, and container ships.
- Participate in studies, concept development and project implementation
- Construction specification review, making technical specifications for electrical and instrument equipment (pressure and temperature sensors, Alarm and Monitoring systems, light signal column, fire detection and general emergency system, emergency shutdown system, etc.), vendor design evaluation and recommendation to ship-owner, vendor drawing review and approval, actual design drawing and evaluation, and production support, and goes thru until the vessel’s trial on sea and shore to its delivery, which included after-sales service (for design related items).
- Introduction of the project and ship’s particulars to yard production managers and installers, discussing the issues encountered from the previous projects, at the same time, building a close design and production team relationship.
- Management of the correspondence between ship-owner and vendors, and yard to vendors, and vise versa.
- (Includes following up with suppliers after design approval).
- Equipment approval during the Factory acceptance test (FAT) and Software acceptance test (SAT) attendance.
- Frequent on-board inspection after design stage, especially during the vessel’s construction, providing support to yard for equipment installation and surveying for design improvements.
- Provide technical support and assistance to sea trial teams during the actual operation/simulation on-board the ship during gas trial and sea trial periods, on sea and at shore.
- Answers to all Class and Owner’s approval, construction, and pre-delivery (after sea trial) comments. Facilitate the completion and execution of these comments (thru communicating with the owner, class, vendor and related team in the yard).
- Major task is the design of the Automation of the Cargo System of LNG Carriers which involves the interfacing of the different subsystems made/designed by different vendors, providing full monitoring and control of the Cargo equipment and alarms on the Integrated Automation System (IAS) thru the hardwires, that enable a safe and cost effective LNG Cargo Transfers (Loading and Unloading from/to ship or shore, tank to tank on ship) and Cargo containment and handling during voyage, with Tank protection system designed at different voyage condition, applied with Emergency Shutdown (ESD) cause and effect analysis.
- Review hull piping drawings (such as P&ID’s, instrumentation diagrams, functional description, control valve/valve remote control system review) as basis in preparing the Wiring diagrams of Control and Instrumentation for Cargo System. As a cargo automation system designer, I am responsible of supplying power to all the controllers of the cargo related equipment and make an interface among the different systems, which will result to the full/partial control of the totality of the Cargo System Operation.
- Check/approve the cause and effect chart for Emergency Shutdown System (ESDS).
- Preparation of the Ship and shore link system designed with different communication methods (electrical, pneumatic, and optical), based on international port standards as required by the building specification.
- Equipment arrangement on Cargo Control Room based on the physical characteristics, layout, and installation method of each equipment and yard cable routing.
- Collate maker data and equipment test procedure, summarizing them as one On-board test procedure for Cargo system – electrical items.
