From leaving school at the age of eighteen I was recruited by the Navy as a Weapons Engineering Artificer. From my initial training I started my degree in Electrical Engineering which lasted for three years of my Naval career.
During this time i gained practical experience on various ships with different training platforms which enhanced my knowledge in varying aspects, e.g. Sonar, Radar, sea survival courses and Firefighting
When on board submarines, my technical knowledge and ability increased dramatically as i was expected to work to a higher standard and absorb and retain knowledge of all equipment and systems on board and how it all fitted together in each section. e.g. Marine propulsion systems and related equipment to this section, fluid systems design, power distribution, energy storage equipment and systems.
I then began working on the strategic weapons systems, learning and maintain all aspects of the nuclear weapons, and all equipment that kept them in a safe working environment. HPA, hydraulics, power, heaters, coolers, humidifiers distribution.
As I was responsible for the department and being the first on the scene in an emergency, I had to learn how to deal with all situations that could arise.
During this time I was promoted to team leader, which developed my communication, organisational, and leadership skills. From learning these skills my technical knowledge was enhanced as I was working hands on along with delegating other tasks to members of my team, which varied in expertise.
