1. Summary (Cover Letter) - CV/Resume Part 1 [Mandatory]

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I majored in Civil Engineering because I like math, want to build,
and it is arguably the broadest, most practical branch of engineering,
so I could specialize later. My interests are in public service,
health, education, administration, and process improvement, to all of
which engineering management is relevant and applicable. I seek the
empowerment of a Master’s degree credential as further qualification
for proper employment in order to support my son and have more
involvement in his life.

In high school, I decided I had seen the American education system,
and I could do better. My vision from there was, once I have
established myself, to build a school from the ground up, and then to
run it. I have always been a critical and highly analytical person,
and I am always looking for systemic ways to make the world better.
Rather than being entrepreneurial, I do not want to compete as much as
contribute, working within a larger umbrella organization from which I
might charter a local campus. I am working with A+ Texas Teachers to
become a certified teacher and gain professional experience.

I have considered working internationally, such as with the Peace
Corps to provide clean drinking water in underdeveloped areas, but
that has been ruled out by my recent divorce. Another career path I
have considered is massage and chiropractic therapy, primarily
manufacture of braces to induce tension on the neck and lower back.
These ideas would involve starting over in a foreign field, and would
require a radical change I am not in a position to make.

I feel I should explain background which has led to this point. In
2002, I wanted to go to one of the US military service academies, but
was declared to be medically disqualified because of misdiagnoses
during family adjustment counseling. Fall 2003, I started at Texas
A&M University as a National Merit Scholar and member of the Corps of
Cadets. Since I came from a broken home and had no family support, I
was an independent student. When it became clear the ROTC programs
would not accept me for a scholarship, I took an on-campus job to help
pay for school. As an involved student leader, I spent more time
helping others with their homework than doing my own, and my grades
fell.

Unfortunately, the economy crashed before my graduation, limiting
hiring selection to only the most competitive candidates, and my 2.8
GPR was hardly regarded, so I was deemed as not meeting the
requirements of most postings which specified a 3.0 or higher. I
failed to secure an internship and hoped without luck that a study
abroad would warrant consideration by employers upon graduation. When
I was denied full admission to the Construction Engineering Management MS/ME
track in May of 2008, I re-applied as a non-degree student to take classes
and perhaps be accepted in January, but I was again rejected for lack
of industry experience, and could not continue without the financial
aid which required program enrollment. I have been turned down for
more recent intern positions which require that applicants be a
current student in a Catch 22 since I already have my degree.

After an unsuccessful interview with Lockheed Martin in April 2009, I
tried again to enter the military. I was chosen by the review board
to commission through Army OCS, but I was discharged when the
commanding officer decided the history I provided was inconsistent
with the earlier record. I had already moved with my wife and son to
the Austin area to be close to relatives, and I took the first job
offer that came in order to keep her happy. Problems with neighbors
led to another relocation, and her disappointment at this additional
setback catalyzed her leaving me. When I learned of it, I joined the
Texas State Guard public works engineering detachment, and my
commander has referred me to his connections as a prospective new
hire, recommended me for promotion to Lieutenant, and encouraged me to
go to grad school with state tuition reimbursement starting in January
2011. Meanwhile, I am receiving FEMA training for professional
development while I continue to network and appeal the accusation of
fraudulent enlistment.
