EMPLOYER : Tongaat Huletts Refinery
DURATION : January 2003 - Current
POSITION : Instrument Control Specialist
At present I am responsible for the maintenance, breakdowns and project work pertaining to the Steam, Compressed Air Distribution, Water Reticulation and Power Generation plants.
Instrumental in changeover of these sections from stand alone controllers to full Distributed Control (Yokogawa Cs 3000 system).
I am quite proficient in software design and implementation on the CS 3000 system.
The refinery at present is going through major upgrades and hence instrumentation is being upgraded to microprocessor-based instrumentation.
I have gained experience in the configuring and programming of this instrumentation viz.:
Corriolus Meters for measuring density - Khrone and Yokogawa.
Magnetic Flow meters for measuring flows -- Khrone and Yokogawa.
Microwave Density measuring Instruments - Mecosa.
Was selected as an Apprentice Instrument Mechanic after undergoing stringent aptitude and practical testing.
In my apprenticeship I learnt basics of Flow, Level, Pressure, Temperature and Automatic Control. The theoretical concepts that was learnt at the Training centre was utilized in faultfinding at the refinery. My area was the Steam Generation Section, which comprised of seven coal fired boilers and two Turbine Generators. In the beginning I was taught by the artisan of the steam generation plant.
Towards the latter part of my apprenticeship this artisan moved to Sapref and because of the knowledge that I had gained and my above average faultfinding abilities, I was allowed to take over the Steam Generation plant and maintain it without a supervisory artisan.
I am very familiar with all aspects of Steam Generation and Turbine Generator maintenance especially temperature and vibration measurements.
I passed my Trade Test with distinction.
I was also chosen as Apprentice of the Year for 2005.
In June 2009 I was promoted to Instrument Control Specialist. This promotion made me in charge of DCS Programming, DCS Maintenance, Projects Handling and over all supervision of work carried out in the Boiler and Power Station area.
