Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Admits patients to ICU. Attaches to cardiac monitor and mechanical ventilator with ordered settings
• Do nursing care plan and discharge planning of patients.
• Monitors patient's vital signs with the use of cardiac monitors. Checks for ABG's, extracts arterial blood sample.
• Manages patients with multiple IV infusions with the use of infusion pumps.
• Manages patients with endotracheal tubes, do suctioning, changes dressings of stoma and collects specimens for culture and sensitivity.
• Monitors central venous pressure and manages central lines, do dressings.
• Takes routine ECG and do initial interpretation and reports to the physician arrythmias for management.
• Participates in “Mega Code”.
• Takes physician orders through telephone and carry-out written orders.
• Do nursing documentation accurately.
• Takes and initiates nursing endorsements and carry out tasks for the shift.
• Supervise junior nurses, volunteers and nursing attendants in carrying nursing interventions. Act as charge nurse for the shift and directs members of the team in the execution of nursing interventions.
• Schedule patients for laboratory examinations such as BUN/Creatine, CBC, CPKMB etc. do initial interpretation of laboratory results and refer to attending physician for management.
• Schedule patients for radiologic examinations such as chest/abdominal XRAY, MRI.CT SCAN etc.
• Manages feeding tubes, feeds patients with NGT tubes.
• Monitor I&O and report for deficiencies.
• Do morning care and assist patients in their activities of daily living.
• Liase with other disciplines like Physical Therapist, Dietician, Social Worker for continous hollistic care of patients. Educate significant others, give health teachings and counsel families.
• Do inventory of medications and supplies of the unit.
A&E Duties and Responsibilities:
• Triage patients in ER according to severity of illness or injury.
• Notifies physician (if not present) when emergency situations arise.
• Recognizes need for assistance in treating patents and calls for appropriate help.
• Assists physician with scheduled procedure or examination of the patient in emergency room or outpatient area while providing for patient comfort, safety and privacy.
• Notifies other departments when their services are needed (Ex. lab, x-ray, RT, pharmacy).
• Observes and carries through with all doctors’ orders which may include: applying dressings, administering and/or dispensing medications.
• Prepares and maintains a sterile work area from skin preparation through procedure to dressing application.
• Assume duties of either circulating nurse or scrub nurse in the operating room.
• Manages contaminated instruments and supplies during procedures to prevent spread of infection.and reduce risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
• Screens patients for admission.
• Assists with outreach physicians with clinics and procedures like thoracentesis, lumbar punctures etc.

• Receives and manages post operative patients.
• Monitors vital signs with the use of cardiac monitors and oxygen saturation.
• Monitors signs of hypovolemic shock.
• Assess post op dressings and wound drains for profuse bleeding. Manages chest tubes and reports unusualties. Transfuse blood and monitors patients’ reaction.

- Do bandaging, handling all types of splints, apply and maintains all types of tractions.
- Assists docotors during procedures like cut down, lumbar puncture, intubation,
thoracentesis and biopsy.
- Prepares patient for X-ray, CT scan, MRI and pre-operational procedures.
- Administers medications; oral, parenteral (IM, IV, SQ. ID).
- Keeps admission and discharge records of patients.
- Document nursing care in accurate and complete manner.
- Accurately records observation of vital signs (TPR, BP), O2 saturation levels.
