I have in excess of ten years experience both as an electronics technician and as a workshop supervisor/manager.

The extensive technical training that I have received during my career in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is demonstrated by my attainment of a Diploma in Engineering – Advanced Trade. My career in electronics has required the maintenance and commissioning of complex communication, navigation, and sensor systems. As a manager in a technical workplace I am also involved in all aspects of the management of personnel, production tasks and customer satisfaction.

To complement my technical and supervisorial skills I am also highly proficient in other areas of workplace management. My passion for safety in the workplace has meant that I am consistently involved all facets of the OH&S systems utilised within the Royal Australian Navy.

As an Equity and Diversity Adviser I am qualified and highly competent at workplace dispute resolution and have on multiple occasions provided advice to all levels of personnel within the organisation. The Certificate III in Health Care that I obtained in 2008 has meant that I am utilised as both a workplace and offshore medic.

Position Held: Maintenance Manager / Electronic Document System Administrator
Position Role:
 Managed up to 45 technicians to support and enable the Navy’s fleet to meet its maintenance requirements and specialised defect rectification. To ensure the workplace complies with all Occupational Health and Safety and Quality Assurance requirements.
 Managed the unit’s document and record management system. Ensured that the system adhered to the requirements of the Privacy Act 1998, Archives Act 1983, ISO 15489 and the Commonwealth government guidelines for responsible record keeping.

Responsibilities:
 Accepted resources, planned and oversaw all submarine maintenance tasks.
 Arranged and conducted on the job, technical, personal development and vocational training for my team
 Conducted workplace assessments of skill to meet the Australian Quality Training Framework requirements.
 Performed the role of human resource manager within the workplace.
 Conducted performance appraisals and mentored in excess of 35 employees.
 Ensured quality control in the workshop met SUBSAFE, ISO 9001 and naval requirements.

Achievements:
 Lead a successful team that deployed to Albany, Western Australia to support the local Naval Cadet Unit. This community support deployment involved the conduct of a large amount of work in a short period of time and resulted in multiple commendations and media coverage.
 Provided Department of Defence accredited Document and Records Management System user training to in excess of 25 personnel per month.
 Provided assistance and advice within the unit on Occupational Health and Safety issues.
 Facilitated continual improvement and increased the employee’s non core skills. This activity had the benefit of increasing both the service provided to the customers and morale of the employees.

April 2004 – July 2006

Position Held: Electronic Technician Team Leader
Position Role:
 Senior maintainer of up to 10 technicians to provide planning and corrective maintenance of complex electronic Submarine systems.
Responsibilities:
 Conducted and planned corrective maintenance on the sonar and combat systems on the Submarine.
 Liaised with external entities such as Defence civilian contractors (Boeing, Raytheon, Thales and numerous Defence internal agencies to provide technical and logistic support to the submarine technical departments.
 Performed the additional role of the storeman to enable the submarine to meet its deployment logistic requirements. This involved ordering and returning stores both from naval and commercial suppliers to enable defect rectification and planned maintenance.
 As Test Equipment Co-ordinator, I managed the quantities of each type of test equipment held on the Submarine and managing the calibration certification requirements of the equipment.
 Conducted on the job training and assessment of technical staff and trainees to meet Navy and/or Australian Quality Training Framework requirements.
 While reporting to the Senior Manager, I managed up to ten staff in a 24hour shift to ensure the safety and security of the submarine, equipment and all personnel. This role involved assisting the Senior Manager in his absence, respond to and co-ordinate all emergency and safety incidents.
 Operated the combat system, involving the co-ordinating information of up to six different sources, prioritising the accumulated information and making recommendations to management.
 Operated the Manoeuvring Control Console, involving rapid and correct responses to emergencies situations, operating multiple mechanical/liquid systems at the same time while maintaining an oversight of other areas of submarine control room.
Achievements:
 Received a Commanding Officer’s formal commendation for outstanding professionalism and devotion to duty.
 Received a Head of Department commendation for my achievements in all aspects of my role on the submarine.
 Received the Teddy Sheean award, a best and fairest award as decided by the entire crew.
 Completion of Certificate IV in Engineering - Higher Engineering Trade, Royal Australian Navy


April 2001 – January 2003

Position Held: Electronic Technician Maintenance Assistant
Position Role:
 One of seven technicians to maintain all technical systems within the Submarine on a shift-work roster system. This included the planned, corrective maintenance of complex electronic systems, conducting ancillary roles and liaising with contractors to ensure the maximum availability of the combat system.
Responsibilities:
 Conducted planned and corrective maintenance on the communications and navigational systems.
 Liaised with external entities such as Boeing, Raytheon, and Thales and numerous internal agencies to provide technical and logistic support to the submarine technical departments.
