Please can you inform me if you are recruiting for the offshore industry at this time regarding a mechanic or as a safety engineer advisor.

Being a mariner at heart I have had three challenging and rewarding careers. I served fourteen years in the British Merchant Navy, reaching a senior position of Second Engineering Officer. As a Senior Engineering Officer I was responsible for the smooth and safe operational running of the ship’s main propulsion, auxiliary and ship board boilers. (6 – 12 bar Boilers). I have also been in charge of looking after boiler water treatment on board sea going vessels. Carrying out emergency, planned maintenance was a daily routine and the overhaul of equipment and re-commissioning back into service was essential. Having the responsibility as a senior officer you were looked upon for leadership, team work and solutions to problematic situations that surfaced every day especially when in charge of control room operations. Working for top leading companies such as Esso Petroleum Tankers, Blue Star Line and P&O gave me a good insight into safety on board and permit to work. My career in the Merchant Navy was exciting, challenging and rewarding. It gave me a sound grounding into any future career.

The central part of my career was with Transas Marine Ltd, a Russian Marine Software company based in Southampton United Kingdom. I was employed as a global Sales Manager in the marine industry. Being involved in day to day business management and working on complex tenders will stand me in good future employment especially at future management level.

Moving back to New Zealand I have joined the certification and verification company SGS in the port of Lyttelton Christchurch. Initially employed as a Maintenance and Safety Engineer at the fuel terminal working for BP, Mobil and Shell it was soon apparent with my good grounding of engineering and the wiliness to take on challenges I was promoted to Operation’s Manager of the Mobil Oil Woolston Fuel Terminal Christchurch. In February 2007 being scene that I had good leadership skills, man management qualities and yet again willing to take on a challenge I was promoted to Woolston fuel Terminal Projects Co-ordinator and Safety Manager.

Working on an Exxon-Mobil oil terminal, Safety of the site and all personnel are a high priority and this responsibility has been honed on to my shoulders as I am a qualified Exxon-Mobil permit writer for all the projects and safety of contractors. I also carry out on top of my project work job safety analysis, loss prevention audits, computer problems but the most important aspect of my duties is to follow all health and safety rules and regulations. Looking after contractors and educating personnel of the company’s HSE policies play extensively on my role at the fuel terminal.

It has become very apparent that my future destiny is in the offshore industry either on Oil Rig’s, FPSO’s or fly in fly out safety advisor. I believe that I have some unique qualities and a person who can quickly learn, trusted as a responsible employee and a person who can be called upon to make decisive decisions when the chips are down.


Having sea going tanker experience I understand that you are not just employed as one role person on a oil rig or FPSO, having this hand on experience and knowing that you could be called upon to swap roles due to manning problems, I therefore become a valuable employee who is flexible and can multi task in different operational duties. I once joined an Esso Petroleum oil tanker as a 3rd Engineer officer only to do the full 4 month trip as the ship board Electrician due to illness; I have this experience and capabilities as a versatile engineer.

Personal History Profile

Over the past twenty years I have had three challenging, exciting and rewarding careers. Taking a marine engineering cadetship up straight from school and completed a BTEC Engineering Diploma in 1985 and a BTEC Engineering Higher National Certificate in 1987. I served fourteen years in the British Merchant Navy reaching a senior position of Second Engineering Officer. My experience at sea was gained on oil tankers, refrigerated container ships and cruise liners. As a Senior Engineering Officer I was responsible for the smooth and safe operational running of the ship’s main propulsion, auxiliary and ship board boilers. Whilst working on the oil tankers I was involved in the discharge of tankers, inert gas systems, control room operations and steam driven cargo pumps. My position also involved running a safe planned maintenance system for the engine room, boilers and generators electrical systems. Hands on engineering and very hard work was a daily routine as break down maintenance and getting systems back into operation was essential for the safety of the vessel. Safety on board was drilled into you as a permit to work system was enforced and strictly adhered to. Having deep sea going experience has made me respect the look and evaluate situation before commencing an operation. Being looked at as a leader of men on a vessel you need good man management skills and I had the respect of fellow seamen who could rely on my experience to over come operational difficulties. Able to keep a cool head and soak up extreme pressure whilst under difficult situations has been a daily work experience in the engineering department of a ship and this will be beneficial to any future role offshore roles.


Leaving the Merchant Navy I joined a company Transas Marine Ltd, a Russian Marine computer software company based in Southampton United Kingdom. I was recruited as the worldwide sales Manager for engine room and liquid cargo ship training simulation products. (www.transas.com)


Having moved back to Christchurch with my New Zealand family, I joined the international testing and verification company SGS in the Port of Lyttelton in July 2005. The responsibilities honed onto me have been maintenance and safety of the oil terminal plant, bunkering ships and discharging oil tankers. Maintenance and planned maintenance was a daily routine and ensuring the safety of the plant was the most important factor. It was soon apparent to my employers that I had ability to learn new concepts very quickly and I was promoted in April 2006 to the position of Operations Manager at the Woolston Fuel Distribution Centre. This involved running all operations on site including nights on call for emergency maintenance, fuel loading problems, computer technical problems and the safety of the plant. As Exxon Mobil is a highly respected global company and safety is their number one focal point I was asked and qualified as an Exxonmobil permit writer and it is my responsibility to Develop safe operating procedures, JSA’s, and conduct loss prevention observations. Promotion gained again in February 2007 and promoted to the role of Projects Co-ordinator and Safety Manager. The position involves ensure all projects on site are being conducted correctly and safely. Contributing to and coordinating the daily work plan, tool box meeting including supervision of all personnel and contractors to ensure maintenance and engineering jobs on the plan are completed safely and efficiently. Whilst on site I have to monitor and record operating conditions of equipment and machinery including emergency and safety response machinery. Having the man management skills learnt at sea I have built good working relationships with contractors and they respect my technical expertise and strict enforcement of safety on site. Training and the development of personnel is another feature of my work especially new employees.

In August 2007 Exxonmobil offered me the position of Terminal Oil Manager in The Mobil Bluff Oil Terminal South Island New Zealand but after deep consideration I turned this position down knowing that my future career lies in the offshore oil and gas industry.


Career Objectives

I am now at a point in my career where I am ready to take on new approach preferably into the offshore industry either on an oil rig or FPSO’s as Maintenance Mechanic or Safety Manager where I can utilise my engineering experience. I am a person who can learn, adapt and slot into a completely new role and can be up to speed very quickly. I am looking for a company that believes in my man management skills, leadership qualities and will give me the responsibility, trust and freedom to put my mark on its company. I am looking for a company that puts safety as their number one priority, is forward thinking and will provide on going quality training so that employees are always at the pinnacle of excellence. The role must be a position that is always challenging and tests your ability to think quickly on your feet to achieve company goals. Having a very supportive family that wants me to succeed a position with international travel working on 28 on / 28 day off would be considered. I am willing to travel worldwide to get the right contract. With my initiative, engineering experience and flexibility I have exactly what a company desires in an employee.
