Naval Architect

Member of the Logistics Technical Service department, the department is responsible for developing a fleet of Ice Strengthen Vessels for the development of Kashigan field offshore Kazakhstan. The Northern Caspian Sea has a range of challenges for vessel design due to the very shallow water depth, seasonal ice and possibility of H2S release during oil recovery phase. Responsible in the department for developing of vessels conceptual requirements and transforming these into a performance specification for subsequent commercial tendering purposes by the company. Then coordinate tendering process with other departments within the company through to successful completion of the tendering process. Tendering process overseen has been for Ice Classed Standby Safety Vessels, Ice Classed Tugs and Management of Living Quarters Barges. Other duties involve acting as company representative during the construction of 8 ice strengthened shallow draft barges for the transportation of drill cutting, liquid drilling mud, dry bulk products, fuel oil and general deck cargo.

Marine Warranty
Marine warranty reviews of seafastening, lift analysis, upending analysis, rigging design, mooring analysis, loadout, transportation and installation procedure, anchor handling procedure, stability for loadout and transportation.
Attend loadout, sailaway and installation of coated pipes, concrete matrresses, cantilever, tripods, flare bridge, helideck, top sides, jackets and modules on cargo barges and heavy lift vessels for approval and issuing of COA. Attend onboard heavy lift ship to check cribbing and seafastening for sailway approval.

Stability Assessment
Intact and damaged stability calculations for loadout and sailaway conditions of several cargo barges and transportation of 2 floating drydocks. Determination of ballast sequence requirements for docking, trailered and lifted loadout of jackets, topsides and several jack up rigs. Produce several Trim & Stability Booklet for a jack up MODU and produce stability software for rig operation. Act as consultant Naval Architect for a load increase test lift, for a 2,800 tonne crane vessel.

Inclining Experiment
Developed procedure and conduct the deadweight survey of several barges and inclining experiments of a number self elevating MODU’s - Al Borz (Not Classed), Nabors 657 (ABS), Nabors 656 (ABS), Nabors 655 (ABS), SAR 201 (ABS), Al Ghweifat (DNV), Atlantic Esberg (DNV), Al Ghallan (GL) and Junana (GL). Investigate, advise and rework reports for several inclining experiments of jack up rigs which have unrealistic results. One of which the legs of the jack up rig had to have 2 sections removed to meet stability and operational requirements.

Mooring Analysis
Mooring capability assessment of a 120m barge in a 170m wide tidal creek during the end loadout of a module. Mooring assessments of several crane / lay barges during installation of offshore pipelines. Mooring assessment of drillship, semisubmersible, diving support vessel, supply vessels and a jack up rig while on anchors while legs are free of seabed to determine likely anchor slippage. Feasibility study into converting a 300,000 DWT tanker attached SPM to a spread moored FSU.

Longitudinal strength assessment of various cargo barges both during loadout modules and for open sea transportation. Local and global structural checks on a barge for a grounded loadout.
Seconded to BP/Parson-Technip on-site Management Team, as Structural Naval Architect for the Al Rayyan Project (conversion of a 6 legged jack up to a fixed production platform). Also part of Noble Denton site team for the refurbishment and upgrade of a MODU. Both jobs the work undertaken was to advise, define and direct the work-scope for the contractor.

Motions Assessment
Diffraction motions assessment of a floating drydock, several cargo barges and a 3 legged jack up rig, to identify transport loadings for the limiting seastates during the tow.

Surveys and Investigations
Undertake damage surveys of vessels and platforms on behalf of the vessel insurers to ascertain nature of damage and estimate cost of repair. Member of a team to investigate a failed loadout of an accommodation module at one of the local fabrication yards. Part of the investigation was to back work the operations based on post incident information and compare this to the proposed procedure and conclude cause of the incident. Site representative for investigation and recovery of a 600T sulphur removal reactor after it fell of heavy load trailers during a road transportation. Survey of bitumen carrier after one of the cargo tanks had leaked bitumen into the inner hull and the vessel began to list significantly, then investigate the stability of the vessel in this condition for coastal voyage to drydock for repairs. Part of team which assisted with the recovery of a jackup rig after one of the spudcan broke a gas pipeline offshore Egypt. Also undertaken numerous condition surveys, consumable surveys, draft surveys and suitability surveys.

Deployment and retrieval analysis for mooring line on Balmoral FPV undergoing special periodic survey will vessel was still operational.

Mooring Analysis
Survival mooring analysis for semi-submersible drilling units on challenging open and developed deepwater location West of Shetland:

Riser Analysis
Operating analysis complying with API codes for North Sea Location.

Naval Architect

Main responsibility was in the Structural Department. This involved both rule based and first principle based design along with use of the FE package “Strand 7” for more advanced structural design. Also conducted several inclining experiments and deadweight surveys. Towards the end of my time at Cammell Lairds I was transferred to the special projects department their I was project engineer for loading out a 3,500 tonne and a 1,600 tonne ship section. Subsequently installing the smaller section on top of the 3,500 tonne part.
