TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE : FEW EXAMPLES

PROSPECT EVALUATION & FIELD DEVELOPMENT

DA FIELD – Elongated anticline structure with aerial extent of 20 sq. km and relief of 200 ft based on 2D seismic data. In 1984-85, one well had been drilled up to Jurassic Section on the structure with little or no success. Due to drilling complication, no conventional test was carried out in this well. The Jurassic section is predominantly consisting of limestone in middle and organic rich black laminated mudstones and shale at top and bottom. In this part of basin, the fractured limestone and organic rich shales are considered to reservoir and source rock respectively. The area was subsequently covered with Q-Land 3D seismic survey with bin size 25m X 25m.

The final processed Q-Land 3D seismic data was interpreted by me on Landmark workstation. During interpretation it is observed that the data quality suffers due to presence of acquisition footprint. The conventional structural mapping at a level in Jurassic confirmed the presence of a structure separated by different fault segments with aerial extent of 30.0 sq. km and relief of more than 300 ft. The faults are picked combining vertical seismic data, horizontal time slices, dip and coherency cube attributes. Fracture and fracture swarms at reservoir level was identified with the help of dip-azimuth and curvature attributes. Based on this interpretation one location was released and subsequently drilled to test the prospectivity of Jurassic section. After testing entire limestone in Jurassic section found to be hydrocarbon bearing.

SA FIELD – The hydrocarbon bearing channel sand in one well of SA field was encountered in basal part of Zubair formation in Lower Cretaceous section, which is mainly clastics with sand shale alternations. The existing 3D seismic data with grid spacing of 25mx25m was utilized by me for mapping of channel sand on Landmark workstation. The seismic data quality at reservoir level was very poor; very low amplitude and very low frequency. For structure and fault mapping, post stacking processing algorithms like ESP3D and Image Enhancement Techniques were applied on conventional 3D seismic data volume. Horizon flattening, horizon based spectral decomposition analysis and subsequent RGB blending brought out very clear geometry, thickening & thinning of channel sand reservoir. This interpretation upgraded the prospectivity of Zubair section in this field and brought out various sweet spots for further drilling.

MN FIELD – Oolites are main hydrocarbon producer in this field. The available 3D seismic data with grid spacing of 25mx25m was interpreted on Landmark workstation. The structural mapping, conventional seismic attributes and wave form analysis (wave form classifier) brought out limit of hydrocarbon bearing oolites in the form of pinch out and doubled the aerial extent of reservoir.

TATIPAKA & PASALARPUDI FIELD – The integrated seismic data interpretation of these and adjoining fields were carried out on Landmark workstation from 1995 to 2000. The reservoirs are mainly deltaic sandstone of Paleocene age. The reservoir characterization in the form of density, porosity and acoustic impedance were carried out in the form of three dimensional cross plots with help of PetroWorks and StratWorks. Horizon based seismic attributes like instantaneous frequency and optimization of depth maps brought out clear cut geometry of hydrocarbon (/gas) saturated sandstone. These interpretations, in this part of the basin, increased the success ratio manifold in exploration.

MANDAPETA FIELD – The seismic interpretation of this and adjoining fields were carried out in 1985 to 1990. The widely spaced 48 fold 2D seismic data were utilized for manual interpretation. The seismic data quality was poorly time migrated and fraught with heavy multiples. The exploratory success in this field was attributed in identifying multiples and positioning of faults on 2D seismic section. Based on this interpretation one exploratory location was drilled with success.

Remarks: The softwares used in interpretation of 3D seismic data on workstation are LogEdit /PetroWork, SynTool, SeisWork & SeisCube, Spectral Decomposition, Post Stack Processing, Depth Team Express and Z-mapPlus.

SEISMIC DATA ACQUISITION

SARBHAN FIELD – Acquired high resolution 3D seismic data by employing SN 308 instrument with objective to resolve thin reservoir sands of order of 15 to 25 m of fluvial origin at 1500 to 2000m depths. The final processed seismic data brought out high quality channel sand reservoir geometry in the field.

BALOL, MEHSANA & ADJOINING FIELDS – Carried out high resolution time lapse 3D seismic survey with bin size: 10m x 10m in heavy oil Balol field for monitoring of fire front in reservoir and 3D seismic survey with bin size: 20m x 20m in highly inhabited and industrialized Mehsana town by employing 408 UL seismic acquisition unit.

With strategic planning of seismic survey on day to day basis and effective management of field crew, completed many 3D seismic survey with cost effective manner within stipulated time frame and in turn brought out appreciable reserve accretion in those fields.

QHSE DOMAIN –Being an active in seismic acquisition units and having attributes of leadership, appointed as management representative by ONGC management for QHSE accreditation and certification of seismic acquisition units in ONGC. Acquired training on ISO: QHSE (Principle and its application) and auditing of QHSE system in different units. Attended various meetings and coordinated with ONGC management, QHSE Certifying Agency and Local peoples on various aspects of QHSE implementation. Received Appreciation Letter from ONGC higher management for getting QHSE accreditation and certification.
