Recently, he was Senior Drilling Superintendent for Maersk Oil North Sea and Island Oil and Gas. He has a broad range of skills, including knowledge of international regulations of the sea, health, safety, and environment for the drilling operations, expert witness experience, running and staffing an organisation with full P&L & balance sheet responsibilities. Has diplomatic experience acquired from attending the International Maritime Organisation, a United Nations organisation. In addition to on-site and first line supervision, he has experience in economic evaluation, rig selection, tendering, contracts & contract negotiation, well design, procurement of materials & services, and reporting.

• Rowan Gorilla VII (JU), Ensco 101 (JU), Global Arctic II (SS), and Noble Ton van Langeveld (SS). Programmes included a turnkey for another operator, long reach horizontal subsea wells, a produced water re-injection, and planning for an HPHT well. Save for turnkey & HPHT wells were undertaken with subsea trees. All wells were production tested. Fields – Gryphon, Dumbarton, and Affleck.

Dates: November 2005 – July 2006
Position: Drilling Operations Superintendent

• Remobilise Petrolia (SS) stacked for 5 years to undertake a two well Celtic Sea drilling programme. First well was a shake-down well with over 25% downtime. The well was production tested. Second well had less than 5% downtime.

Position: Managing Director

Consulted for a number of different organisations as follows on short-term projects:
• Assembled a rig mechanisation proposal for UK Health and Safety Executive
• Served as an expert witness for Tor Drilling concerning a semi-submersible. Documented maintenance on all rig systems and testified in front of full arbitration panel
• Agip KCO, Kashagan Field, Kazakhstan - authored Well Control Response Plan, Well Capping Plan, Relief Well Plan, Blowout Ignition Plan (including heat/gas plume simulation, rig design, kill simulations), and Well Control Strategy. Did a HAZOP for Kashagan drilling two rig drilling island.
• Researched heavy oil exploitation and wrote a workshop outline for Brazil seminar for EnergyWise
• Developed a means of managing safe operations on drilling rigs called Wiser Drilling

Company: International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC)
Dates: 1992 - 2003
Position: Director, European Offshore Affairs

• Organized the activities of the Chapter, including hiring staff, maintaining an office, assembling the yearly budget and activities programme, planning, holding and minuting monthly meetings, representing members with HSE, DTI, UKOOA, OPITO, NPD, OLF, OCA, Norwegian Rig Owners, Danish Ship Owners, North Sea Authorities Forum (the North Sea HSE regulators), and individual member clients, e.g. Shell & BP, International Maritime Organisation, International Association of Oil & Gas Producers.
• North Sea Chapter business management activities - office and project budget including initial concept development, budgeting, vetting & choosing contractors, managing the projects, including issuance of final reports which usually become national or international best practice guidance documents. Project Manager for deliverance of North West European HSE Case Guidance document.
• For rig operations, this was a chance to learn how drilling contractors and service companies work and think. This knowledge conveys great insight how to make rig operations more efficient and safer.
• Standard contracts – worked to compile standard contracts with CRINE, LOGIC, and IADC
• Safety – Helped to found Step Change initiative – see website http://stepchangeinsafety.net See also list of publications/citations.
• Health – helped with UKHSE with RIDDOR (dangerous occurrences & disease) package, also OGP similar guidance (oil companies’ equivalent of IADC).
• Environment – various guidelines for IMO, OGUK (used to be UKOOA) plus participated in the process for which UK oil companies have to go to the public for consultation regarding new field developments
• Competence – helped write competence guidelines that are now part of the UK Safety Case and IADC International HSE Case Guidelines
• Training – helped develop IADC North Sea Chapter “Green Hand” Introduction to working on Drilling Rigs Training. Consulted with OPITO to develop UK BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety, Induction, and Emergency Training)
• Project Manager for delivering North West European HSE Case Guidance Document, now a worldwide document for HES assurance for MODUs
• Worked with IADC & Step Change, including IADC & Oil Company CEO’s to examine 11 fatalities in the North Sea. This resulted in issuance of rig-usable case studies in the document, Fatalities Report, How Will You Be Making Your Next Trip Home, see Citations below for reference.

• Manager of Drilling Engineering Group, Aberdeen. Directional drilling, mud properties (water & oil based mud) and rig operations optimisation. Special project – one well project with dynamically positioned drillship Pelican, Mediterranean.
• Drilling Manager – Ninian Central & Northern Platforms. Ninian Central consisted of two rigs, 42 wells. Northern Platform consisted of one rig, 25 wells.
• Drilling Project Manager – Greenland with dynamically positioned drillship Pelerin. Location was deep water and subject to operational upset from icebergs.
• Relief Worldwide Drilling Manager, Chevron Overseas, San Francisco
• Assistant Project Manager – Scott Lithgow shipyard, Greenock, for construction and sea trials of dynamically positioned drillship Ben Ocean Lancer whose first contract was with Chevron.
• Drilling Manager, Denmark, various jack-ups for exploration activities.
• Rig Site Manager - Spain, Portugal (semi-submersible Bideford Dolphin).
• Rig Site Manager, Grand Banks, offshore Newfoundland, seconded to BP for recovery of lost BOP stack in deep water with dynamically positioned drillship Havdrill
• Drilling Project Manager – Madagascar, onshore. Transported rig by land, sea, and air. Set up camp and drilled 18 wells to test shallow oil deposits
• Rig Site Manager, offshore, Namibia rank wildcat, semi-submersible Sedco 135, discovery of Kudu Field.
• Drilling engineer & Rig Site Manager – Texas (onshore/offshore). Wrote drilling programmes then went to the rig site and performed the work. 90% of the work was onshore but there were some wells in Galveston Bay from a posted barge, some jack-up wells, and one workover whereby a land workover unit was placed on an offshore platform
• Rig Site Manager – South Louisiana offshore. Majority of work in Bay Marchand and South Timbalier areas. Most work was from bottom-founded barges, e.g. Penrod 51. There was some jack-up work and some tender work.
