Shannon Valley Developments Jan 2000-Jan 2003 General Foreman
With this company I was involved in a number of projects during the three years. Shannon Valley is a civil engineering company, one of the largest in Ireland due to its size I was responsible for over seeing aproximately130 personnel e.g. machine operators, general operatives, ground workers, engineers and foremen.
The projects I was involved in were:
• Dublin Port Tunnel:
This was a 300 million project for the Dublin Port Tunnel. Digging out and removing massive earth from the core machines to both ends of the tunnel, tarmac road onto reinforced concrete designed roads. Retaining walls to both sides and a separating reinforced structured wall to the centre of the tunnel. My duties was to co-ordinate all major digs and roadwork construction as a General Foreman.
• Marine Defense:
This involved construction of water barriers in the sea to prevent water damage to the Irish rail system. This was a 30 million project. Coordination of the sea tidal timed table was the utmost importance in which correct decisions must be made in a timely manner with an accurate data provided from MET. The slightest miscalculation on the weather would result in serious back-log and have a knock- on affect on to the cost of the project.
• Pipe works under the sea bed over three kilometers:
This involved installation of 1800mm diameter sewerage pipe under the sea-bed stretching a total of 3km in length. The first kilometer of either side of the pipe works is laid under the sea-bed and the remaining 1 Kilometer is fitted on top of the sea bed. The starting end (from Sutton) is connected to a huge collection system and is then pumped across to the purifying system on the Rings End. The contract amount was16 million euro to completion. My duties were to co-ordinate and manage these piping installations and timely digs due to the tides and weather restrictions.
• Wind farm in Galway:
This involved working on extremely wet land “bog” with very tight time scale that involves very slow heavy machinery movements due to the low density of the ground in which sudden erratic movements to the machine could cause serious accidents. Works was carried out with extreme safety and precautions through out this project for the construction and erection of Wind Turbines in these areas.
