I am currently working as a Senior Intensive Care Nurse, employed by the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. I will be undertaking the Health and Safety Executive approved Offshore Medics course in September/October 08 and completing my C.O.E.T in November 08.
I wish to actively peruse a career in the offshore oil and gas industry as a health care professional. I want and intend to broaden my personal and clinical skills in a more challenging environment.

The Intensive Care Unit is an 8 bedded general ICU that takes patients needing high dependency and intensive care. The unit takes patients from all medical disciplines including surgical, neruo, and major trauma. Treatments offered are renal replacement therapy, advanced Cardio-Vascular support, advanced respiratory support. The unit has an excellent teamwork approach and by liaising with all members of the multi-disciplinary team ensures for safe and effective care of patients.

Role and Responsibilities

• Lead nurse for clinical education on the unit
• Lead nurse for preceptor ship and mentorship (NST307)
• Key trainer for multiple medical devices
• Key trainer for the transfer of patient intra and inter hospital (S.T.A.R Course)
• Admission of patients from all areas of the hospital and transfers in
from other hospitals
• Implementation of appropriate nursing care plans
• Document and discuss any changes in patients condition
• Participate in activates specific to the ICU
• Priorities patient care
• Management of Intensive Care patients in multi organ failure
• Shift Co-ordination and staff allocation
• Participate in relevant research specific to the ICU

The Intensive Care was a 28 bedded multi disciplinary unit. Specialties covered where, Cardio-thoracic, Neuro, Surgical, Medical, Trauma and Burns. The unit was the major speciality centre in Western Australia. As a registered nurse my duties were to take call of all kinds of ICU patients on the unit. I was also required to transfer patients to other departments and hospitals safely. Working in such a large unit developed my self confidence and greatly developed my clinical competence and knowledge.

Details of Courses:

Degree in History with Sport and Physical Education- This degree program was 3 years and split 50:50 between History and Sport and Physical Education. The history component looked at the very beginnings of sport and how it shaped and influenced society from c2000bc to current times. It encouraged the skill of academic research at level three studies. The Sport and Physical Education component was a practical and academic course looking at various training principles, sport coaching techniques, human biology and biomechanics. A high level of physical fitness was required and it also increased my knowledge of how the human body works. The course encouraged the use of team work; it also built my confidence in public speaking.

Dip He, Nursing Studies (Adult Branch) - Diploma in Nursing Studies- This intensive course covered general nursing and gave me a thorough understanding of nursing practices and principles. It encouraged students to question traditional nursing methods, which helped me appreciate a much wider understanding of nursing in general, and provided me with greater confidence in forming nurse/patient relationships. Main areas of study were; sociology, psychology, communication skills, researched - based practice and holistic patient care. Main nursing areas covered were; surgical, acute medical, intensive care, orthopaedic, emergency and community.


Degree in Professional Development in Nursing Studies (With a focus on current concepts in ICU) this is degree is a Work Based Learning degree with a focus on current topics and principles in Intensive Care Nursing. This degree with enable me to be a more knowledgeable and safer practitioner, help develop my mentorship and teaching skills, help develop my management skills.

HSE Offshore Medic Course:- this course will give me the nessesary knowledge and skills to be able to practice safely in remote/offshore enviroments, within my sphere of competence.
