Duties and responsibilities
To assist the Chief Mate in operational and maintenance planning
To support the Shipboard Organization and Safety Organization.
Responsible to the Chief Mate for the discipline and control of Deck Ratings, at all times.
Responsible to the Chief Mate for the effective deployment of ratings assigned to him for operations and maintenance and to ensure that safe working practices are followed at all times.
To carry out assigned task and to take charge, when required, when mooring unmooring, anchor work, shifting ship, etc.
To supervise and assist with the rigging and use of lifting gear on deck and in the engine room.
To Supervise and assist with hold-cleaning, washing, preparation, ballasting and de-ballasting.
Assign ratings to watches and tasks as required.
Assist Officers when and where required during cargo, bunkering, bunkering or berthing operations.
Assign ratings to supervise, handle and stow stores and spare gear.
To be responsible for the operation, care and maintenance of cordage of safety equipment eg boat and pilot ladders, life raft ladders, gangways and nets, safety harness, gantlines, bosun’s chairs, stages, punts, etc.
Responsible for repair and maintenance of mooring ropes, wires and running gear.
To supervise the timekeeping of assigned ratings and the quality of their work.
To develop own knowledge, skills, habits and attitudes and those of subordinates – with the emphasis on acquiring additional skills.
To carry out instructional duties as required.
To assist with and participate in all aspects of Safety Training.
Obtain and maintain a close working knowledge of agreed policies and regulations on all aspects of shipboard work and life.
To control certain areas of stores, particularly those stowed on the Deck Store rooms and workshops; and to assist with the stock control records and preparation of requisitions.
To have particular involvement in the security of the ship, its equipment, tools, stores and outfit; and to be responsible to the Chief Mate for those items of the foregoing assigned to his control.
To carry out a routine of sounding holds, bilges, tanks and spaces as required; and to record the results of those measurements.
To maintain oil pollution equipment on board.
