Working within the Marine Engineering Department on board HMS York and HMS Invincible.
Duties included: Assisting with the up-keep and maintenance of the ships Rolls Royce gas turbine engines, diesel generators, auxiliary machinery, industrial evaporators, reverse osmosis plants sewage treatment plant, hydraulic systems, serviced outboard motors, air conditioning and refrigeration units. It was also my responsibility to ensure the operation of this equipment and associated systems.
My position as First Class Engineer also gave me the responsibility of the embarkation, filtration and distribution of fuel and potable water. I also helped maintain the ships stability with the ballast systems on board enabling aircraft a level as possible landing and take off.
During my initial training I covered mathematics and basic mechanical and electrical theory. Application training on marine engineering, equipment and systems which included AC/DC electrical power generation and distribution, electric motors, starters and domestic electrical equipment.
I have also been trained on electrical measuring and test equipment, basic workshop practices, use of hand tools, wiring, soldering and health and safety regulations.
Other duties included teaching new recruits basic skills and general health and safety procedures. I worked in Newcastle Armed Forces Careers Office where I was the first point of contact for the general public and formal army career enquiries.
