Primary focus was support for CDI’s industrial clients. Provide design services for the MEP portions of buildings including laboratories, process buildings, computer rooms, offices, etc. Most recent projects were small to medium sized facilities, usually with DX cooling with electric heat. Mechanical Engineer Specialist

1987- December 2005 University of Texas Austin, TX
Mechanical Engineer & Project Manager
I worked for this large size (5000 + employees) university as the Mechanical (HVAC) representative on all new and major renovation projects. Primary responsibilities include supervision of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems design, specification, cost estimating and con¬struction support services, QC/QA and commissioning procedures and client-user coordination. I supervised four engineers and one draftsman. Projects include Institutional, Wet Laboratories, Office Buildings, Athletic Facilities, Dormitory, Student Services (Healthcare).
• The University of Texas has had an aggressive building program over the last 15 years, including 4 major wet lab buildings up to 300,000 square feet and $60 million dollars, renovation of the 75,000 seat football stadium, a new 15,000 seat soccer-track stadium, renovation of the 17,000 seat basketball facility and partial renovation of the world class indoor swimming facility, numerous office/classroom buildings, a world class Art Museum, a 400 bed dormitory and a low temperature, long-term library book storage warehouse.
• I designed the mechanical system for the low temperature long-term library book storage warehouse; 2 million volumes stored at 55F/50%RH at ¼ the cost of previous buildings around the country.
• I designed many smaller projects, from clean rooms to sprinkler designs and classrooms, with smaller work being performed by in house forces, while larger projects were contracted out. A consistent approach was taken, with safety first, along with maintainability, durability, energy efficiency and first cost being balanced to bring a quality design and installation.
• I started programs to: 1) fire sprinkle all new buildings and major renovations preceding by 13 years the recent mandate from the State Fire Marshall; 2) provide a regional fire water system for the campus, minimizing the necessity to provide fire pumps and standby power throughout campus; 3) incorporate heat recovery systems for wet lab buildings in lieu of complex, maintenance intensive hood control systems.
