He graduated in Medicine at Rome University in 1973 with a dissertation on Epstein-Barr Virus and got a doctorate PHD in Microbiological Sciences.In 2006-2007 he got a Mester in Bioethics
He developed new methods for immunoenzymatic laboratory diagnostics (Cancer Research 1983), and was the first to individuate the links between Antisense-RNA [micRNA] and the interferon system (Nature 1983). In 1984 he discovered the antimicrobial activity of the commonly used potassium sparing diuretics amiloride and triamterene (Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy 1984). In 1987 he was the first to hypothesize the mechanisms of the origins of AIDS viruses (Nature 1987), a contribution widely reported in the book of Mirko D.Grmek: History of AIDS: Emergence and Origin of a Modern Pandemic.Princeton University Press 1991- (Grmek M.D. :AIDS. Storia di una epidemia attuale- Bari, Laterza, 1989). In the last decades he published several papers on the molecular mechanisms of amyloid plaque formation in Alzheimers' Disease, also discovering the role of irreversible di-tyrosine cross-links in beta amyloid peptide and tau protein neurofibrillary tangles.
