‘A’ station of 4 x 120 megawatt, and a ‘B’ station of 4 x 200 megawatt Parsons steam turbines driven by 8 individual Babcock and Wilcox dual fuel (oil/gas) re-heat boilers.

Duties required in the Mechanical Office, include the maintenance planning and execution of TIPS major plant overhauls, requiring-
• Preparation of survey work lists, maintenance of critical path networks and bar charts using manual and computer techniques
• Ensure that replacement components, specialised tools and equipment are available during survey.
• Assist in the writing of comprehensive survey reports.

Provide an inspection service such that the principals of the Boiler & Pressure Vessels Act were maintained, following exemptions granted on 19 February 1987, comprising:
• Evaluating the maintenance schedule document.
• Inspection of the boiler and deaerator using the most appropriate test method as per schedule. Testing and setting of safety valves.
• Provide written records and photographs as required, of the as-found and final conditions, including work recommendations and actual work performed.

Coordinate & facilitate significant projects requiring project management skills and technical direction beyond the routine foremen/supervisor level.

Supervise the civil refurbishment of the reinforced concrete pump housing and duct work associated with the main salt water cooling system. The work required the removal of chloride damaged steel reinforcing, and its replacement. The concrete cover was reinstated using thermally and dimensionally stable grouting material, to ensure a homogenous repair,
These underground and sub-sea repairs required strict safety procedures to be maintained at all times.

Design and prepare drawings of complex components and elements of equipment and works. ‘Reverse engineer’ components to ensure constant supply of components no longer available from the manufacturer (at an economical price)
Supervise and provide technical direction to the local drafting office, to maintain sound drafting practices and compliance with relevant Australian standards.
Investigate and implement appropriate routines, inspections and work methods for the mechanical maintenance computer program.
Operation of the balancing machine using single and two plane balancing techniques involving vector analysis and computer programs.

In conjunction with NATA registered technicians, carry out inspections and non-destructive test work including :-
• Magnetic particle and red dye penetrant crack detection.
• Ultrasonic thickness testing.
• Internal inspections using the fiber optic boroscope
• Condition monitoring of rolling element bearings.

Provide technical assistance and research services for Engineers, etc concerning plant, tools and materials
Maintain and up-date various Branch files including technical catalogues, drawings, engineering standards and high temperature turbine bolt life records, etc.

Mar 1987, TECHNICAL OFFICER - Coal Combustion Test Facility, Osborne Power Station, SA
June 1987 Operate ETSA's CCTF on a continuous basis, to evaluate the effect of various operational parameters on the conversion of low grade brown coal deposits.
Investigate the corrosive effect of these coals on conventional boiler tube alloys, the ash forming characteristics and their thermal output. To ensure accurate control, all parameters were under direct control of a central PLC system.
Provide maintenance, technical support and an on line diagnostic service.
Photograph and analyse the deposition products etc. during and at the conclusion of
each test. Manufacture and install customised thermocouples prior to restarting.

Production of isometric schematic sketches to enable local isolation of plant could be achieved with maximum speed and minimum disruption, in the event of a major emergency.
As Fire Control Officer, duties required the evaluation of fire hazard, followed by the installation of Fire Protection/Detection Equipment or altering operational practices.
Relocating into the Environment Office involved monitoring noise abatement programs as well as analysing vibration levels of plant and machinery to predict required maintenance. Interpreting theoretical designs to produce practical sound enclosures for plant and equipment.
