QC Geophysicist/Data Processor (PGS and Fugro) – Sep 2006-Oct 2008

• QC and approval of digital and analogue data quality offshore
• Setting up of projects offshore, using both Windows and Linux-based systems
• Report writing and administration of logs and paperwork connected with surveys
• Assisting with deployment and recovery of in-sea equipment
• Working closely with other survey crew, including engineers, navigators and client representatives

As a Data Processor with Fugro Seismic Imaging (September 2006-November 2007) and a QC Geophysicist with Fugro Survey (November 2007-July 2008), my time was split between working in the office in Aberdeen and offshore doing 2D surveys on the single streamer vessels Fugro Meridian and Fugro Mercator.

In the office with Fugro Seismic Imaging the data I dealt with was digital only. The role involved reading data from tapes and performing basic processing, generally up to brute stack stage, and occasionally running additional de-noising flows. The work offshore was a combination of quality control of data during acquisition and basic processing of that data. Similarly, with Fugro Survey, my time was split between the office and offshore, the work involving quality control of digital and analogue data offshore and assistance with the compilation of reports in the office.

In both jobs with Fugro the digital software used was the company’s own in-house Linux-based system (Uniseis) and, while working with Fugro Survey, I gained a little experience of CODA and Kingdom Suite for analogue surveys.

I was employed by PGS as a QC Geophysicist on the 6 streamer vessel Atlantic Explorer from August-October 2008. As with Fugro Survey, the role involved quality control of data during acquisition, but unlike my work with Fugro it also involved a lot of physical work on the back deck deploying and recovering in-sea equipment (tailbuoys, streamers, birds, etc.).

Software used (in order or competence): Uniseis, CODA, Kingdom Suite, Viper, gAS
