Sub-Surface Manager - Gandhar Field, ONGC, Western Region, India (2006 – Current)

(Corporate Level – 3, Executive Level – 6)

• Lead managed the field appraisal, field development, field monitoring, field management & Reservoir Management and continuously maintained annual production of 3.2 MMT Oil + OEG and R/P ratio of 10, in spite of very high “do nothing decline” due to sub-optimal production facilities.

• Lead the Multi Disciplinary Asset Management core Team of 15, made coordination & networking with cross disciplinary operation sub-team leads (functionally obligated), planned, directed and monitored all operational tasks - development drilling, water injection, gas injection, production monitoring, production optimization, work over, stimulation, well intervention, reservoir surveillance, facility optimization etc., and thus controlled the entire operations of the Asset of 4000 employees.

• Carried out reserves assessment & classification, coordinated reserves auditing by D&M, made monthly production allocation & injection allocation, maintained half-yearly reserves accounting.

• Decided on depletion plans/development options of 125 pools, managed sub-surface uncertainties, analyzed and released 39 development and sidetrack locations in 3 years with economic analysis, based on classical analysis - updating of static models, log correlations, enhanced reservoir characterization, reserves status, decline curve analysis, material balance, pressure-production-injection performance monitoring with OFM and well analysis. • Prioritized development locations/sidetrack drilling, fulfilled all statutory requirements and obtained Mining Leases & HSE clearances and provided drilling program/well plans/GTO/rig schedules of 45 locations; directed and monitored drilling and logging, performed log analysis, decided well completion plan & lift, planned well testing and carried out Pressure Transient Analysis with PAN System and initiated well start-up. Achieved 6 % of average field production from oil gain of development/sidetrack wells in each year, which on an average amounted to 305 % of target gains.

• Analyzed well work opportunities, maintained live hopper of wells for work over, prioritized locations/rig schedules, provided detailed well work program including polymer based water shut offs for 380 work over jobs in 3 years (12-14 rigs), directed and monitored work over operations, pursued post work over activities, maintained data base of jobs & results. Achieved 11.2 % of average field production from oil gain of work over wells in each year, which on an average amounted to 200 % of target gains.

• Commissioned the first WAG pilot of India and ensured its success with continuous analysis and monitoring of the flood front and continuous identification of suitable wells for work over & completion as offset producers. Resolved initial injectivity issues while switch over between water & gas injection cycles. Achieved an oil gain of 88000 tons in 38 months with greatly reduced water cut and realized the additional recovery of the pilot much ahead of the plan. With the successful learning curve, prioritized the implementation of the EOR WAG pilots of 2 more sands and has finalized field scale implementation of the WAG EOR scheme in 2 other sands.

• Monitored, managed & optimized the unique miscible gas injection EOR scheme of India & closed in 100% of cumulative production target with 106% of yearly production in last 3 years.

• Ensured continued success of IOR scheme with effective field monitoring and Reservoir Management and achieved 135% of incremental oil gain and 110% of total oil production.

• Planned and analyzed well tests/reservoir studies/pressure transients with conventional and PAN System and used them to diagnose/evaluate success of development well completions/ work over jobs/functioning of gas lift valves. Made regular reservoir surveillance plans, analyzed & used them for field monitoring, production optimization and Reservoir Management. Planned and used hi-tech logging services like CHFRs, FMIs, PLTs, MDTs, DSI/sonic scanner as well as SWCT for above purposes.

• Planned and monitored water injection (pattern/down dip/OWC/GOC) and gas injection (lean gas injection in gas caps, miscible gas injection and WAG) with IVC/CVC calculations, optimized the volumes wrt reduced availability and followed best practices in Petroleum Engineering/ Reservoir Management. Achieved average IVC of 70% against the plan of 65% (over & above natural supports) and maintained reservoir pressures within ± 10 % of 18 years old pre-injection pressures.

• Participated in well & surface network analysis, differentiated between reservoir and well losses. Analyzed, planned and monitored several rig less well work opportunities/production enhancement jobs including stimulation jobs, gas lift optimizations, back pressure reductions, through tubing perforations, temporary gas lift with single point perforations and opening of closed wells based on reservoir surveillance. Analyzed and planned 75 polymer based profile modification jobs/conformance control in injectors in 3 years for production enhancement through reduction in water cut. Achieved 8% of field production from oil gain realized from such production enhancement jobs/quick wins, in each year.

• Analyzed and finalized 10 suitable candidates for hydro-frac of a deep, high temperature sand for reduction of R/P ratio & recovery enhancement. Negotiated with service provider M/S Schlumberger and finalized scope of work and contract agreement. Planned and used tools/technologies like sonic scanner and oriented perforation with gyro and ensured success of the jobs. Made detailed job plans and predicted post-frac performance using FracCade. Devised methodology to reduce frac pressures and overcame initial failures. Monitored data fracs and optimized main fracs. Achieved post frac oil production of 1, 46,000 tons and oil gain of 86,000 tons in 22 months and cost break even in 5 months. Achieved 1/3 reduction in R/P of sand. Used learning curve and fractured 5 more wells of other sands for production enhancement and realized post frac oil production of 240 tpd and oil gain of 140 tpd. Used the knowledge and experience of the first two phases and guided the departmental stimulation services to take up 10 more jobs, saving 75% of the cost as compared to service provider. Guided sister assets and other oil companies on selection of wells, methodologies and technology for hydro-frac.

• Planned and coordinated technology induction in different areas including horizontal drilling (earth modeling with DSI logs, extendable casings, RSS, LWD); hi-tech logging, reservoir characterization and geological & reservoir simulation modeling through service provider; work over (casing patch, macaroni tubing); recovery enhancement; data base & communication. Carried out elaborate decline curve analysis, base production forecast, total production fore cast with identified inputs, recoveries under different variants for negotiating a commercial alliance on Integrated Project Management (IPM) basis with an established service provider. Making significant contributions as member and Sub-Surface Team Lead in the Asset Management MDT, assisted by a consultant. Involved and helped implementation of SCADA, ARCUBE and SAP in the Asset. Maintained and populated data & reports through EPINET.

Chief Reservoir Engineer-Sub-Surface Manager –Lakwa-Lakhmani-Laiplingaon Fields, ONGC, North East Region, India (2003 – 2006)

(Corporate Level – 3, Executive Level – 5)

• Lead managed the field appraisal, field development, field monitoring, field management & Reservoir Management and maintained annual production of 0.65 MMT oil from the highly matured field, in spite of very high “do nothing decline” owing to sub-optimal production/processing facilities, highly sensitive socio-political environment and very high water cut from the active water drive major sands.

• Lead the Multi Disciplinary core Team of 25 and coordinated with functionally reporting cross disciplinary operational sub-team leads and directed & monitored all Asset Management activities and operational tasks.

• Reviewed and updated static models and guided/reviewed/accepted geo-cellular reservoir simulation models for 2 of the major sands. Developed strategic depletion plans, provided the critical lead for infill locations and work over priority areas and successfully demonstrated differential depletion in the active aquifer supported sand with water reaching the structurally highest areas with bypassed oil saturation in inter cone areas and more importantly, leaving large bypassed oil saturation in the flank areas. Released 20 infill locations/ sidetrack locations and worked over 60 wells in 3 years based on the above concept, all of which produced with lowest water cut and many of which came on self.

• Introduced CHFR for better understanding of current saturations at different structural positions; took advantage of the fining upward sequence of the major sand; made log correlations, tracked and mapped a sub-sand of water free oil production; used all these information for successful identification of infill development locations and well work opportunities. Pursued large number of high-volume polymer based water shut off (pan cake treatment) in work over and improved the work over success to 75-85% as compared 55-65% with conventional cement squeeze jobs. Directed & monitored work over operations of 13 rigs.

• Demonstrated sensitiveness of drawdown in water coning and optimized the liquid production (to 10% draw down) for controlling water cut of the major sands. Identified highly matured areas for high rate liquid withdrawals with ESPs and thereby improved oil production volumes.

• Reviewed static models, improved reservoir characterization, worked over and put on production four isolated closed small pools, including one with super high pressure of MWE 2 with history of sand production and CTU fish. Revisited geological model and production history of another such field, reviewed reserves assessment & classification, proved larger P90 reserves base, released and drilled two additional development locations, firmed up remedial work over job of two old wells and put on production all 4 wells with exceptional production rates.

• Released a step out location, carried out coring, PVT, SCAL, detailed testing of additional sands of a major new discovery, integrated G&G results, finalized development program and released 16 locations along with scheme of water injection for early development of the high potential Green field with 4 Barails sands and subsequently established its corridor with the main field.

• Made detailed studies and prepared IOR scheme with depletion plans, inputs for field development, sand wise base production profile and incremental production profile, economic evaluation, submitted Feasibility Report and got the approval/financial sanction of several agencies including full board of directors, government nominees, financial institutions and regulatory bodies.

• Effectively used the previous experience with the giant Mumbai High offshore field and coordinated the induction of technology for hi-tech wells – horizontal, high angle, sidetrack and USRDH for the first time in the remote onshore field. Made major contributions in the Task Force constituted for Project Management - finalized hi-tech well locations/well profiles, coordinated/used diplomatic skills and negotiated with several service providers/operators/ bidders, finalized scope of work, conducted and moderated technical pre-bid conferences, finalized contracts, guided and monitored implementation. Successfully inducted the unique sidetrack technology of M/S Zarubezhneft, Russian State Oil company, to cut windows in 5 ½” casing, re-drill 4 Ύ” slim holes with high angles of 70-80°, log, lower 4” liner, cement it and perforate with deep penetrating charges.

• Identified suitable wells and coordinated implementation of MEOR for EOR. Gained experience of ASP EOR pilot implementation, though the project was unsuccessful.

• Worked on several projects with consultants - reserves auditing (D&M), production enhancement/reduction of reserve to production ratio (GCA & Halliburton), Corporate Asset Transformation, field development and hi-tech drilling (Indian consultants Dr. P.K. Chandra, A.K. Agarwal, H.S. Cheema).

• Participated in well & surface network analysis, differentiated between reservoir and well losses, identified facility augmentation/optimization/de-bottleneck requirements based on performance prediction of field/sands/wells and made significant contribution in the Asset Revamping Project of US $ 100 MM.
