1. Summary (Cover Letter) - CV/Resume Part 1 [Mandatory]

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am Italian, and I would like to propose my application to join your company, in quality of Geotechnical/Civil Engineer. The division of your company that I am interested, is the Offshore. The choice is based on my previous experience and professional interest, or where I would like to develop my knowledge and career.
In October 2008 I concluded my MSc. course in Civil Engineering at Greenwich University. The Master was financed by an EU scholarship that I won in my home country.
I did my first degree in Italy at the University of Calabria with a five years course, under the name “Laurea in Ingegneria Civile”, or in English “Master Degree in Civil Engineering”. The specialization of my studies is Transportation, and I did my thesis on Bridges, analysing the design procedures of a Segmental Bridge from a structural point of view. Furthermore, during my degree I have taken exams related to other subjects of Civil Engineering (Geotechnical, Hydraulics, and Structural), so I can collaborate easily with other disciplines, and it was not for me a problem to work in other fields.
Before come in UK for the Master, I worked in Athens (Greece) for two years, in a consultant company. The name of the company is TRITON Consulting Engineers Ltd, and their main type of business is the Geotechnical and Maritime Engineering. During this experience, I worked as Geotechnical Engineer for coastal/offshore structures, and other kinds of jobs related to the business, like walls, earthworks or deep foundations. Precisely, in the site activities I was the supervisor of the geotechnical investigations, that given the projects nature were also offshore, plus in the office I collaborated in the design activities. I collaborated in the design of Ports and Offshore structures, and consequently I could understand all the actions or processes related to a maritime construction. Furthermore, the site activities related to the office design, it gave me the chance to understand the parameters and data, that are necessary to take from the site and bring to the office for the elaboration of a project. The first year in Greece was interested, and I could improve my knowledge. After the first year, I got that the chances to develop my career and knowledge were low. Finally, I had a good chance to develop my grade and knowledge by a Master in UK, acquiring a new useful experience.
The Master chosen from me at Greenwich, is mainly based on management courses for Civil Engineers, plus these matters are applied in a real field, like the Water Environment. During the course of Water and Environmental Management, I was introduced in the flood and coastal problems, that in future the seaside areas will be more exposed due to climate changes. Inspired from the topic, I also developed my thesis on the Offshore Breakwaters, analysing their behaviour by the geotechnical software PLAXIS. The main problem related with a breakwater construction is the availability of big quantities of selected materials. New materials and solutions are necessary to be introduced in that market to solve the increasing request of coastal structures in the future, respecting the environmental policies. Moreover, during the course of Computer Modelling of Civil Engineering Problems, I was involved in the use of ANSYS for the model of 2D & 3D civil problems, and the theory of finite elements analisys.
About my professional interest in the Geotechnical field, there is the analysis and model of a problem. I really find challenging to model through softwares real earths processes, like landslides or deformations. I consider interesting the creative aspect of the analysis process, being each project solution personal and unique.
Regarding my ICE membership and the process that I should follow to become Chartered Engineer in UK. Actually, I am Chartered Engineer in Italy and Greece, so I could become CEng in UK, through the european law for the professional equivalence, applying directly at the ICE.
Joining your project team, I could acquire an useful and interesting professional experience, and I could develop my career in an international context, collaborating in big projects overseas.
Furthermore, I have undertaken projects and assignments which involve different countries (Greece, Spain, USA), where I have improved my language skills. As such I have had innumerable opportunities to flex my interpersonal skills and to develop a thoroughly flexible approach to changing situations and environments.
In my activities and interests, there are group sports, like football, plus exits or trips with friends. In both activities I like the participation and involvement as a team member, trying to achieve the target, that could be for a football game the victory. Instead for the exits and trips, the target is to enjoy our time everybody together.
I would like to collaborate with your project team, I look forward to the opportunity of meeting with you personally. For your further information I have attached a copy of my CV. Should you however have any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

2. Work Experience - CV/Resume Part 2 [Mandatory]

- From Apr/04 to Jun/05, Technical office of Civil Engineering (Via L.Repaci 39, 87036 – Rende, Cosenza – Italy).
Trainer Civil Engineer (professional training).
Type of business: Civil Engineering design
Duties: Feasible project “works of development, rationalization and completion for a water network”, foundation analysis and deign, study of environmental impact assessment, architectural design of a residential building, steel and concrete structures, structural design of a residential building, pipeline network, design of a fire hydrant system, design of the internal gas system of a building for civil habitation, AutoCAD design.
Description: After my graduation at the University of Calabria in Italy, I started a professional training at a technical office of Civil Engineering. During this experience, I could introduce myself to the working environment, understanding the differences between the theoretical world of University and the real practical world of business. I was involved in small civil works of different field of Civil Engineering, plus I started to familiarize with technical software like AutoCAD or design finite elements software.

- From Jan/06 to Sep/07, TRITON Consulting Engineers Ltd (Athens – Greece).
Geotechnical Engineer (Consultant Engineer).
Type of Business: Maritime & Geotechnical Engineering, Consulting Company.
Duties: offshore and onshore geotechnical investigations, stability analysis, foundation analysis and design, soil improvement methods, port planning, design of harbours and marinas, offshore structures, land development planning & design land and costal areas, urban planning and development on marinas and ports zones, activities of structural design, roadwork design, laboratory sample analysis, AutoCAD design, bill of quantities.
Description: I was the supervisor of the site investigations onshore and offshore, and I also organized the site activities related to the boreholes, like access to the site for the track, water supply for the drilling, location of the boreholes, towage operations in the offshore activities, and sometimes the administrative operations to allow the investigations. Anyway, all these operation were reported to the Head Department, included the costs of the eventual new field operations. During the investigation I gave the route map to follow the drilling, the depth of each plunge, and the SPT tests. I defined the depth of each soil layer on site, plus I placed and enveloped the samples in the boxes, deciding the samples for laboratory tests. The boxes with the soil samples were sent to the laboratory after the site activities, and I edited the laboratory test, based on the project aim. The laboratory tests programme was agreed from the Head Department, before start the tests. Furthermore, during the investigation were carried out permeability tests (MAGG and Lefranc) for design purpose.
In the office activities I was inside a working group made of me, another Geotechnical Engineer of my same age, and one Senior Geologist. In the reports edit we divided the tasks between us, like calculations of the parameters or other geotechnical calculations. Plus there was a team work in the definition of the project solution or parameters to use. But finally, in the decisions the Senior Geologist had the lead, due to his big experience in the field. I was the only one to use AutoCAD, so I did all the drawings necessary to the projects of our working group. The geotechnical soft wares used from the company were PLAXIS and Larix 2G (Cubus). Of the two geotechnical soft wares I know PLAXIS, so I collaborated with the other Geotechnical Engineer in the modelling of the project problems by PLAXIS. I wanted to learn Larix 2G, but I had not the chance, also because in the company the softwares were assigned in different computers that I had not access.
When the batches of work in my group were low, I collaborated also with another group, due to my flexibility with other disciplines and AutoCAD knowledge. Therefore, in my work list you will find different kinds of maritime works: urban planning of a coastal area, structural design of a drain box caisson, refurbishment of a docks, coastal design, dredging plan, bill of quantities, construction phases, structural design of reinforced concrete boxes for docks/breakwaters toe protection. Many other work that I contributed are not mentioned in the project list, but just those one that I consider important.

During the Master at Greenwich, I developed a thesis was on the Offshore Breakwaters. Actually, I am not a Maritime Engineer, so I had not any design knowledge on the matter. Therefore, I was motivated to do a lot of research and studies to understand how to design a breakwater. The time covered for the dissertation was three months with a dead line for the submission in September. Finally, I was able to conclude the project on time, obtaining a good result. In this experience I was faced with complex problem to carry out, and I was able to solve it, using the analytical skills that I developed at University. I am particularly proud of it, because I was able to carry out the project without any previous knowledge on the field. Definitely, what I have you enjoyed most about being at University. It is the flexibility in the handle of any kind of project, and the challenge to study new Civil Engineering aspect, improving the knowledge.
Finally a design problem in Civil Engineering could be handle in different ways, and there are different solutions for it. So, it is necessary a flexible approach in a project solution, considering related factors.
Moreover, during my work experience I was involved in an internship at the scientific office of the Italian Embassy in Washington DC (USA). It was not a matter directly related to my studies, but I chose to undertake it, improving my English language knowledge. From this work experience I acquired also the importance of the public relations, and all the staff related to a diplomatic mission abroad. Thanks to this experience I learned new skills, not directly related to my specialization, but as well important in a job.
